Legend has it that, in order to treat people gone mad because of a tarantula bite (a poisonous spider), some populations in Puglia have created special music and rhythm, powerful enough to root out this madness. And there they are! Apulian Pizzica and Tarantella are a type of music and dance which are extremely compelling and impossible to resist. The rhythm of drums, violins, accordions and harmonicas, and the frantic steps of the dancers wrapped in their long skirts are a unique expression of the Apulian popular culture.
You will discover the history, the meanings and the customs related to these two folk dances, thanks to two expert dancers. You will visit small workshops where expert tambourine players still create these instruments using old techniques handed down from father to son. You will know the deepest origins of the Pizzica and the most original peculiarities such as Torre Paduli’s “dance of knives”.
There is a range of options to choose from: a dance course held in a Salento masseria, a live spectacle of expert dancers and musicians, and so on.
