Arrival at Bari airport. Transfer to hotel. Accommodation in the hotel room and dinner.
After breakfast, visit of Alberobello, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and world capital of the trulli. You will walk through its narrow streets full of typical handicraft shops, small courtyards and ancient trulli, discovering the charm and history of these peculiar buildings of Puglia, unique in the world. Lunch. You’ll visit Martina Franca and its charming old town, an extraordinary example of Baroque in the Itria Valley. Return to the hotel, traditional Apulian dinner in a tavern.
Breakfast and departure for Trani to visit its beautiful cathedral, one of the most famous examples of Apulian Romanesque. Lunch. You’ll then move to Castel del Monte, a UNESCO site and an architectural gem of Frederick II, called “Stupor Mundi”. Return in the evening and dinner at the hotel.
Visit to Lecce, considered by many as the “Florence of the South”, because of the old town’s rich variety of architecture, culture and history. Guided tour of the city, visiting churches and workshops where the typical papier-mâché and stone are crafted. Lunch. In the afternoon, you’ll move to Otranto, the city known as the “Gateway to the East”, once a stronghold against the Turks. You will see the cathedral that contains one of the largest mosaic floors in Europe and the bones of the martyrs of the infamous “Sack of Otranto”. Return in the evening and dinner at the hotel.
Breakfast and departure for Matera, a UNESCO site. You will visit the city of Sassi (Stones) to become familiar with its architecture and the lifestyles adopted until a few decades ago. Guided tour of the Sassi. Lunch. In the afternoon, guided visit to Altamura, the city of bread. Visit of an old bakery with bread tasting. Return to the hotel and free afternoon. Dinner at the hotel.
Breakfast before moving to a seventeenth-century masseria. There, you will walk in the company of donkeys, along country roads, relaxing in the quiet rural Puglia, until reaching an eighteenth-century masseria, and visiting an ancient rural school, the farmer’s house, and the old stables. There you’ll have a taste of donkey milk. Lunch at the masseria, eating typical local dishes. Departure for Putignano, where the oldest Carnival in Europe takes place. You’ll visit the old town and the papier-mâché museum at the City Library. Return to the hotel and dinner.
Breakfast before visiting Ostuni, known as the “White City”: a fairy-like village, full of typical handicraft shops overlooking very suggestive streets and squares. Then, visit to a sixteenth-century masseria with ancient olive trees and an underground oil mill with organic oil tasting. Lunch. Afterwards, it will be time to discover the Itria Valley, with a guided tour in Locorotondo and Cisternino, both considered among the most beautiful villages in Italy. Return to the hotel and dinner with traditional folk show.
Breakfast and departure for Bari: the tour includes walking through the streets where local women make orecchiette (the typical pasta) on the street, and a visit to the Basilica of Saint Nicholas, for centuries a place of pilgrimage, still attracting people from all over the world. Departure for the return.
