Breakfast and departure to San Giovanni Rotondo. Visit to the shrine of Saint Pio, with stops at the ancient church, the grave, the cell, the miraculous crucifix and the new church. In the afternoon, you’ll visit Monte Sant’Angelo, with its picturesque old town featuring typical townhouses, and its mysterious cave-shrine dedicated to the Archangel Michael, a UNESCO heritage site and place of devotion and pilgrimage for centuries. Breakfast and departure for Bitonto (with luggage). You will visit the magnificent Romanesque cathedral and the old town. You will then reach Polignano a Mare, to walk around the old town overlooking the sea and tasting the famous ice cream. Afterwards, you’ll visit Monopoli, its old town, the old port and the cathedral. Arrival and accommodation in a 4 star hotel near Fasano/Ostuni. Dinner and overnight stay.
Breakfast at the hotel before visiting Martina Franca, with its beautiful old town, an extraordinary example of the Baroque in the Itria Valley. You will then reach Alberobello, world capital of the trulli and UNESCO heritage site. Guided tour to discover the history, the architecture and the symbolism of the trulli. Tasting of typical products in a trullo. In the afternoon, you’ll visit a masseria with an ancient olive grove and an underground oil mill. Tasting of organic olive oil produced at the farm. Breakfast and departure for Matera, another UNESCO site and European Cultural Capital for 2019.You will visit the city of the “Sassi” (stones) to know its architecture and the lifestyles adopted until a few decades ago. In the afternoon, guided tour of the city of Taranto. Return to the hotel, dinner and overnight stay.
Breakfast and departure to Lecce, considered by many as the “Florence of the South” because of the old town’s rich variety of architecture, culture and history. Guided tour of the city, visiting churches and workshops where the typical papier-mâché and stone are crafted. In the afternoon, you’ll visit Galatina, centre of the Greek Salento, to discover the stories related to the famous popular dance, the “Pizzica”. Afterwards, you’ll be in Otranto, known as the “Gateway to the East”, Italy’s easternmost location. You will visit the Cathedral with its evocative Chapel of the Martyrs that contains some of the bones of the martyrs who fought against the Turks that wanted to invade the town.
