Staying in a cave
The Albergo Diffuso (“scattered hotel”) in the Sassi of Matera is a unique hospitality experience, one that can’t be ranked with the usual “stars” and that is far from any traditional concept of luxury. The New York Times has judged it among the most extraordinary destinations in the world; the Times among the ten best hotels in the international scene; the Condé Nast’s Tatler guide has included it among the 100 most beautiful hotels in the world. You’ll be accommodated in restored caves, furnished using an extreme philosophy of recycling. The furnishings (including clean lines, and without decorations) are made with ancient recycled wood, following traditional crafting techniques; flax linen are actually early twentieth-century wedding sheets, entirely hand-sewn. In the morning, breakfast is served in the ancient and picturesque thirteenth-century Rocky Church, with cakes, biscuits, jams, cheeses and meats produced in a local organic farm. Each cave is equipped with modern heating systems with underfloor heating, cooling system and internet connection.
Guided visit of Matera
Matera is a UNESCO heritage site and was often used as a movie set for its absolute uniqueness. Visit to the renowned Sassi with admission at the House-Cave museum and rocky churches.
